Five to try: Scenic Drives

This stretch of road (the B3306) enjoys magnificent sweeping views across the west Cornish coast and beyond. The road quite literally hugs the remote coastline as it cuts through ancient fields which rest on mighty cliffs. With every twist and turn, the view gets even more glorious with the sea on one side and rugged moorland on the other. Stop off along the way at Zennor and view the church, or visit the mining remains at Geevor, Levant and Botallack. At St Just turn right and head out to Cape Cornwall, a quieter alternative to Land's End! Finish the journey at Sennen by driving down to the cove and taking in the stunning views of the famous Longships Lighthouse.

Head to The Roseland peninsula for the ultimate Cornish driving experience. Here narrow single lanes are the norm and scenic views come courtesy of some exciting manoeuvring. From Tregony, the gateway to The Roseland, take the winding A3078 to St Mawes and have fun exploring the network of smaller roads leading to the hidden gems of St Just in Roseland, Carne, Pendower, Portloe and Veryan. Head out to St Anthony Head for fantastic views across Falmouth Bay before heading east to have lunch at the Nare Hotel. Afterwards carry on towards Caerhays Castle and Gorran Haven.

For maximum impact start out at the pretty vilages of Cawsand and Kingsand before driving out to Rame Head where you get stunning views up and down the coast. From there take the coastal road that sweeps above Whitsand Bay in a westerly direction so the coast on your left can be viewed in its full splendour. The road drifts high above the five miles of golden sand and rugged cliffs, populated by cabins of all shapes and sizes that cling to the cliffs. You’ll pass through Freathy before turning inland with the imposing Tregantle Fort on your left. Follow the road through Crafthole where you can detour down to Portwrinkle or continue on towards Seaton and Looe.
