Chapel Bar Beach
Chapel Bar lies at the mouth of the River Camel in North Cornwall, just a 10-minute walk from the charming fishing port of Padstow between Chidley Pumps (Lower beach) and St George's Well Cove.
At low tide, a vast, wide expanse of sand is revealed which stretches for around 1½ miles along the Camel Estuary. Take in spectacular views of the Camel estuary from the beach and Daymer Bay on the opposite side. At high tide most of the beach is submerged along with the 'Doom Bar' sand bank, which protects the estuary from the strength of the Atlantic. Folklore tells of the ‘Doom Bar’ being created by the curse of a dying mermaid in revenge, and has been responsible for more than 600 shipwrecks since records began.
